Pathfinder Module: Crypt of the Everflame from Paizo

A classic Pathfinder module meant for level 1 characters. I ran this in Savage Worlds Pathfinder for a group with a bit of experience, and made some changes to up the difficulty. My players enjoyed it, and the great part is that Everflame is the first of a three-module trilogy. We got a ton of mileage out of this adventure and the sequel.

Play Time: About six 2-hour sessions.

General Thoughts: This is good, a classic Pathfinder 1 module. While meant for brand new level 1 characters, it was easy to increase the difficulty and make it more challenging. Adapted very cleanly into Savage Worlds Pathfinder, creature and hazard stat blocks were readily available in the Savage Worlds books.

I ran a lot of Pathfinder Society scenarios for my Savage Worlds Pathfinder group in 2022. Since I was once an avid Society GM, I had the adventure PDFs on hand. We weren’t running the scenarios as organized play games, so I was able to improvise and go off the cuff for a lot of scenes, add in filler, hop around, etc. I also made sure to only run highly rated scenarios (as rated on Paizo.com), avoiding the duds.

Crypt of the Everflame was a classic Pathfinder 1 module. In the original storyline, the PCs enter an old tomb that was supposed to be made into a training ground for new adventurers from the local village. Since I wasn’t GMing for new PCs, I took the gloves off and restored the tomb’s function as a proper dungeon – no pillows at the bottom of the pit traps, no blunt crossbow bolts in the traps. Low level undead everywhere (because it’s a tomb, and that’s what tombs contain in more fantasy games.)

My players decided to avoid a fair number of rooms, which has been my experience in other GM sessions I’ve ran this. I’ve never had a group attempt to 100% complete Everflame, which is probably for the best. I’m not a completionist GM, I’m GMing for the story and camaraderie.

I don’t recall any moment where there was incredible danger, but it’s been a while since those sessions. I remember that the skeletal champion at the end fight sundered the PC fighter’s maul, which made the combat much more difficult. I also recall that one of the random skeleton minions in that same fight rolled 4 Wounds and nearly killed a PC in a single rusty scimitar blow.

As a general note, I really like Savage Worlds Pathfinder, possibly even more than Paizo’s Pathfinder. The flatter power level means that I can run a wider variety of Pathfinder stuff without TPKing my group, while the system has a pulp action, adventure movie feel (what Savage Worlds is known for.)
