Treading the waters of Pathfinder with a brand new rules system.
Overview
- Very detailed rules – everything is defined.
- Character creation was very difficult.
- Classic high fantasy, d20 roll high system.
- It’s almost a board game RPG.
Pros
- Historic Pathfinder, an entirely new system.
- In-depth tactical combat, a bit like D&D 4E.
- Doesn’t require the “standard party” to succeed.
Cons
- Character creation. New players should use the Pathbuilder app (Android and browser) or play a pregen.
- Role-playing tends to take a back seat to combat and exploration.
- Complexity. It’s not as complex as Pathfinder 1, but more complex than D&D 5E.
Final Impression
- I’ve GM’d quite a bit of Pathfinder 2 (during COVID), and it’s a great tactical combat game.
- It contains mechanical rules for persuasion and intimidation, but overall it’s more of a beefed-up Hero Quest board game.
- Your experience may differ, but it’s meant to be played with maps and minis.
