Pathfinder 2 from Paizo

Treading the waters of Pathfinder with a brand new rules system.

Overview

  1. Very detailed rules – everything is defined.
  2. Character creation was very difficult.
  3. Classic high fantasy, d20 roll high system.
  4. It’s almost a board game RPG.

Pros

  1. Historic Pathfinder, an entirely new system.
  2. In-depth tactical combat, a bit like D&D 4E.
  3. Doesn’t require the “standard party” to succeed.

Cons

  1. Character creation. New players should use the Pathbuilder app (Android and browser) or play a pregen.
  2. Role-playing tends to take a back seat to combat and exploration.
  3. Complexity. It’s not as complex as Pathfinder 1, but more complex than D&D 5E.

Final Impression

  1. I’ve GM’d quite a bit of Pathfinder 2 (during COVID), and it’s a great tactical combat game.
  2. It contains mechanical rules for persuasion and intimidation, but overall it’s more of a beefed-up Hero Quest board game.
  3. Your experience may differ, but it’s meant to be played with maps and minis.
