The Underspores, Ep 1

The Belowdowners returned to the perplexing chamber of rotating tumblers. Through careful coordination, they successfully aligned the massive stone cylinders and finally entered the correct combination to unlock the hidden vault. Fat Slasher ventured inside, discovering a trove of treasure including a potent bone wand, a suit of mithril chainmail, several valuable gems, and a substantial amount of gold, silver, and copper coins. After securing the loot, the party reorganized their inventory, leaving behind the less valuable copper to make room.

On their way out, while retrieving some dropped items, the group was ambushed by a grotesque green slime that emerged from the wall. The creature immediately latched onto Minathor, and despite the party’s frantic efforts to remove it—including spinning Minathor around like a top and attempting various attacks—the slime began to gruesomely transform his leg into a wobbly, gelatinous appendage. After a difficult struggle, they managed to destroy the acidic ooze, but Minathor was left with a permanent, unsettling reminder of the encounter.

Returning to town, the party sold off their magical treasures and celebrated their haul, with Minathor purchasing a war pony he dubbed ‘Tony’. Their newfound renown brought them to the attention of the mayor, who tasked them with a new mission: investigating the source of mind-numbing spores seeping from the sewers beneath Weaver’s Row. Descending into the fetid tunnels, they encountered a den of spore addicts. Minathor, ever curious, sampled one of the mushrooms and found himself in a state of euphoric delusion, believing he had gained superpowers.

Pressing deeper, they discovered a hidden shrine to the god Gede. Their investigation of the room’s three washbasins led them to turn on all the faucets at once, inadvertently summoning a hostile ochre jelly. The battle was fierce; the creature split into smaller jellies with every slash, and its attacks nearly brought down Minathor and Bogmeyer. Through grit and teamwork, the party finally defeated the ooze, cleansing the shrine’s bowl to reveal purifying water before ending the session deep within the dangerous sewer system.

OUTLINE:

Solving the Vault Puzzle

  • The party returned to the chamber with the four rotating tumblers.
  • They coordinated to set the tumblers to the combination 2-3-2-2.
  • The fourth tumbler locked into place, causing the entire central mechanism to rotate 180 degrees.
  • An opening to a previously hidden vault was revealed on the ceiling of the final room.

Looting and an Ooze Ambush

  • Fat Slasher entered the vault and found a bone wand, mithril chainmail, gems, and a large amount of currency.
  • The party managed their inventory, leaving the heavy copper coins behind.
  • While retrieving items, a green slime emerged from the wall and attacked the party.
  • The slime latched onto Minathor, transforming his leg into green jelly before it was killed.

Return to Town and a New Quest

  • They split the gold, and Minathor bought a war pony named Tony.
  • The mayor recruited the party to investigate mind-numbing spores coming from the sewers of Weaver’s Row.

Into the Fetid Sewers

  • The party descended into the sewer system, navigating the ankle-high water.

  • Minathor consumed a mushroom and began hallucinating that he had superpowers.

The Shrine of Gede and the Ochre Jelly

  • The party found a chamber with a statue of the god Gede and three washbasins.
  • They turned on all three faucets at once, causing an ochre jelly to emerge from a spigot.
  • The party fought the jelly, which split into smaller copies when hit with slashing or piercing attacks.
  • Minathor and Bogmeyer were both knocked unconscious during the brutal fight.
  • After a long struggle, the party finally destroyed the last of the oozes.

NPCs:

  • Gede: A neutral god of the hearth and plants. A statue of Gede was found in a hidden chamber within the sewers.
  • Spore Addicts: A mixed group of dwarves, goblins, and humans found in the sewers. They are preoccupied with consuming hallucinogenic mushrooms and seem largely oblivious to the world around them.
  • The Mayor: The political leader of the town. After hearing of the Belowdowners’ success, the Mayor hired them to solve the problem of dangerous spores seeping out of the sewers.

ITEMS:

  • Hallucinogenic Mushroom: A strange mushroom found in the sewers that, when consumed, causes powerful hallucinations and delusions of grandeur.
  • Minathor’s Slime Leg: Less of an item and more of a permanent affliction. Minathor’s right leg was transformed by a green slime into a wobbly, green, gelatinous mass.
  • Mithril Chainmail: A suit of medium armor made from the famously light and strong metal. It offers good protection without hindering stealth.
  • Purifying Bowl: A large ceramic bowl from the Shrine of Gede. When filled with water, it purifies the liquid, making it smell of flower petals and taste sweet.
  • Tony the War Pony: Minathor’s recently purchased war pony. A sturdy mount trained for battle.
  • Wand of Unlife: A magic wand made from the knobby finger bone of a swamp troll. It can cast ‘animate dead’ and ‘create undead’ but drains the user’s constitution with each use.

LOCATIONS:

  • Shrine of Gede: A small, hidden chamber in the sewers decorated with a statue of the god Gede and three stone washbasins. It seems to be a place of forgotten worship.
  • The Sewers: A network of fetid, 10-foot-wide circular tunnels beneath the town. Ankle-high feculent water flows through the pipes, and strange spores are currently emanating from them.
  • The Vault Puzzle Room: A complex chamber containing four massive, rotating stone tumblers that serve as a combination lock for a hidden vault. The hallways themselves are part of the mechanism.

FACTIONS:

  • Thieves Guild: A criminal organization operating in town. They take a cut of any wealth gained from carousing.

QUESTS:

  • Investigate the Mind-Numbing Spores: Hired by the mayor to venture into the sewers, find the source of the dangerous spores plaguing Weaver’s Row, and put a stop to it.
  • Unlock the Vault: Figure out the combination to the rotating tumbler puzzle and claim the treasure within the sealed vault.

PLAYER CHARACTERS

  • Bogmeyer: A sturdy fighter who uses a club and shield. Bogmeyer is a reliable presence in the front line of combat, unafraid to get close to enemies and strike them down.
  • Elm: A cleric who is new to the adventuring life. Elm provides crucial healing for the party by meditating and is capable in combat with daggers and spears. They tend to be the voice of reason when things get strange.
  • Fat Slasher: A kineticist who wields the power of darkness, shaping it into damaging blasts. Often the one to scout ahead or venture into dangerous places first, Fat Slasher looted the vault and is not afraid to get their hands dirty.
  • Minathor: A powerful bull-man Blood Rager who wades into battle with ferocious strength. After an unfortunate encounter with a green slime, his right leg has been permanently transformed into a wobbly, gelatinous appendage. He recently purchased a war pony named Tony.
