Kingmaker: Ep. 39

The Owlbear Adventurers geared up in Labroad and set out for the Pavari Mountains, seeking the lair of a red dragon. Their six-day journey took them through scorching heat and driving rain, culminating in a trek across the Mogul Slough, where they discovered an eerie path made of giant, ancient lizard skulls.

They arrived at a deep ravine where they spotted their quarry, a scarlet drake, circling a high, windswept outcropping. Opting to investigate a cave at the base of the cliff, Keston and Izzy discovered the entrance was barricaded and the surrounding beach was littered with the bones of kobolds. As they approached, a spectral mist rose from the remains, and ghostly kobolds swarmed them, sapping their strength and obscuring their vision.

After Keston smashed through the bone barricade, the party fought their way through the kobold warren, battling bands of the diminutive creatures, tricking a pair of blind butchers, and defeating a brawny chieftain whose body crumbled to stone upon death. They also discovered strange, green, yogurt-smelling lumps that the kobolds treated with reverence.

Following the scent of brimstone, they emerged from the caves onto the 200-foot-high outcropping. There, amidst a circle of humming standing stones, the drake Zivendril guarded her hoard. A brutal fight ensued. Keston managed to lasso the creature with a grappling hook, and with Brother Carl’s help, anchored it to a stone. The drake fought savagely, mauling Keston and hurling Brother Carl from the cliff’s edge. Despite the grievous losses, the party rallied. Keston miraculously survived his injuries to rejoin the fray, and the adventurers struck the final blow, slaying the beast. As Brother Carl lay dying below, Izzy flew down to save him, while Clicktick, mesmerized by the crackling runes on the stones, touched one and was infused with draconic power.

NPCs:

  • Fluffy: Clicktick’s loyal and ferocious direwolf-sized eidolon. He follows his master’s commands without question, charging into battle to bite and tear at any designated lizard.
  • Kobolds: A tribe of small, red-scaled reptilian humanoids serving the drake Zivendril. Some were encountered as strength-draining specters, while others fought with spears and daggers. Their chieftain was unusually large and his body turned to stone upon death.
  • Leida Kremenko: The quest giver in Labroad who offered a bounty for the dragon’s heart. She paid the party 100 gold for the damaged organ.
  • Zivendril: A young, scarlet-scaled drake who had made her lair atop a cliff in the Pavari Mountains. She commanded a small tribe of kobolds and guarded a hoard of treasure. Fierce and territorial, she fought savagely to defend her home before being slain by the adventurers.

ITEMS:

  • Draconic ‘Yogurt’ Lumps: Dozens of fist-sized, waxy, rock-hard green lumps found on shelves in the kobold warren. They smelled tangy like yogurt and were treated as precious items by the kobolds. They are possibly dragon pellets or eggs.
  • Dragon’s Heart: The heart of the drake Zivendril, carved out by Yohei. Though mangled in the hasty extraction, it was successfully delivered to Leida Kremenko for a reward.
  • Grappling Hook: An essential piece of equipment used by Keston to lasso Zivendril and drag her down from the sky.
  • Lead Box: A special container used to transport the dragon’s heart safely.
  • Ring of the Trickster: An intricate gold puzzle ring recovered from the dragon’s hoard. Once solved, it allows the wearer to cast illusionary spells like Mirage and Mirror Image.
  • Shark Tooth Amulet: A magical amulet from the hoard, consisting of a fossilized shark’s tooth on a braid of enchanted kelp. It negates disadvantages for fighting or swimming underwater.

LOCATIONS:

  • Labroad: A town where the party prepared for their expedition, buying supplies and potions before heading south.
  • Mogul Slough: A swampy region the party traversed to reach the mountains. It contained a strange and memorable path made of giant lizard skulls.
  • Zivendril’s Lair: A cave system and clifftop aerie in the Pavari Mountains. The lair featured a bone-strewn beach haunted by spirits, a warren of kobolds, and a high, windy outcropping with humming runestones where the dragon kept its hoard.

FACTIONS:

  • The Soot Scales: A name invoked by Yohei in an attempt to command the kobolds. The name seemed to hold some sway or meaning to the creatures inside the cave.

QUESTS:

  • Slay the Dragon: The adventurers were hired in Labroad by Leida Kremenko to find and slay the red dragon plaguing the region and bring back its heart as proof.

PLAYER CHARACTERS

  • Brother Carl: A zealous and physically imposing priest of Lord Ord. Brother Carl is utterly fearless, wading into battle, shoving enemies aside, and even attempting to belly-flop on a group of kobolds. His courage nearly cost him his life when the dragon threw him from a cliff, but he faced death with faith and was ultimately saved.
  • Clicktick: A Weighing Summoner whose primary companion is Fluffy, a massive direwolf-sized eidolon. Clicktick directs Fluffy in combat with simple, direct commands like ‘Eat all the lizards!’. After the dragon fight, he fearlessly touched a humming runestone and was imbued with powerful draconic energy, marking him with glowing tattoos.
  • Izzy: An Oriad Cleric whose faith manifests as a potent, death-dealing power. She single-handedly dispatched numerous kobolds by touch, draining their life force. She is also a vital healer, flying down on dragonfly wings from her cloak to save Brother Carl’s life after his perilous fall.
  • Keston: A brawny human paladin devoted to Iroh, the tea maker. Despite his impressive strength being temporarily sapped by spirits, he proved instrumental in the dragon fight, lassoing the beast from the sky. He is a steadfast frontline combatant, quick to pray and even quicker to shove his foes.
  • Yohei: A pragmatic gunslinger and the only party member fluent in Draconic. Yohei prefers to stay at a distance, taking calculated shots with his firearm and using his words to intimidate lesser foes. While others rushed to save their fallen comrade, he pragmatically focused on securing the mission’s objective: the dragon’s heart.
