Blood River, Ep. 10

Last session, The River Explorers hired a boat back to Hunlet Hold, with Jacob Jr. aboard despite Haisha’s warning that the Four Inevitables had foretold death. At the river landing, they recovered an empty, bloodstained elven canoe, its side torn open. It bore the markings of the elves who had traveled toward the headwaters, but what happened to them remained a mystery.

Inside the hold, the explorers passed the rotting black dragon and searched the dwarves’ abandoned quarters. Egret discovered that the shield-maiden statues stopped advancing when she left their room, sparing the party another fight. A swarm of blood-drinking sting bats was less obliging: Goblekki nearly died, but Jacob Jr. stabbed one off him while the others drove the swarm back.

Beyond the lower chambers, a creeping black mist followed them toward an armory. Two towering copper-clad guardians struck down several explorers before Sabo cleaved the last one apart. Past them lay the dragon’s hidden hoard: gems, enchanted metalwork, and thousands of silver coins. The party carried away what they could and buried the rest, but some heard the dead dragon’s voice in the treasure and returned to Aeroford under a draining curse. They secured healing, and Haisha arranged to bring the petrified dwarves home. The treasure had been found; the elves, the buried silver, and the dwarves’ restoration still awaited answers.

OUTLINE:

Voyage to Hunlet Hold

  • The party hired a boat upriver, and Jacob Jr. insisted on accompanying them despite Haisha’s ominous Terok reading.
  • At the landing, they recovered an empty, bloodstained elven canoe with a torn side and markings matching the elves bound for the headwaters.
  • The sailors agreed to repair the canoe and tow it back.

The Abandoned Hold and the Sting Bats

  • The explorers passed the black dragon’s rotting corpse and searched the abandoned dwarven bunks.
  • They found an emerald-hilted silver shortsword, which Jacob Jr. borrowed.
  • Egret entered a room of animated shield-maiden statues, then withdrew; the statues returned to their places.
  • Sting bats nearly drained Goblekki to death, but Jacob Jr. and the party killed the swarm.

Black Mist and the Armory Guardians

  • Cold black mist pursued the party through the lower chambers, and they blocked its passage beneath a door.
  • Two towering copper-clad dwarven guardians attacked in the armory, repeatedly felling members of the party.
  • The explorers destroyed both guardians, with Sabo splitting the last one apart.

The Dragon’s Hidden Hoard

  • Records beyond the armory described Hunlet Hold as distant and largely self-sufficient.
  • The party found silver piled ankle-deep, gems, and a metal-banded cold-iron mace in the dragon’s lair.
  • They carried away as much treasure as they could and buried the remainder for a later return.

The Curse and Return to Aeroford

  • Several explorers heard the dead dragon’s voice and suffered a draining curse while returning with the silver.
  • They reached Aeroford with the elven canoe and obtained relief from the curse.
  • Haisha arranged to recover the petrified dwarves and recommended Jacob Jr. to the temple.
